President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening cooperation within the Commonwealth, stating that such collaboration is important to ensure that every nation, regardless of size, can thrive.
In a message marking Commonwealth Day, President Dr Muizzu said the Commonwealth continues to demonstrate the value of unity among nations in promoting peace, good governance, sustainable development and international cooperation.
The President highlighted the need for stronger collaboration among member states in areas such as climate resilience, concessional financing and sustainable debt solutions.
Referring to this year’s Commonwealth Day theme, “Unlocking Opportunities Together for a Prosperous Commonwealth,” President Dr Muizzu said the theme reflects the shared responsibility of member states to work together in addressing global challenges and creating new opportunities for development.
In addition, the President noted that the theme aligns with key national priorities of the Maldives, including strengthening climate resilience, expanding education mobility, supporting sustainable tourism and advancing digitalisation. He added that ensuring the benefits of development reach communities across the country remains an important focus.
Highlighting that the Maldives is a Small Island Developing State, President Dr Muizzu also pointed to the country’s vulnerability to the growing impacts of climate change and external economic pressures.
The Maldives joined the Commonwealth of Nations in 1982 but withdrew from the organisation in October 2016. The country later rejoined and was formally readmitted to the Commonwealth on 1 February 2020.
