The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has denied allegations that a foreign national arrested on drug charges was tortured while in custody.
In a statement issued last night, police confirmed that the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) is investigating the case and has assured full cooperation with the inquiry.
Police noted that the detainee did not report any injuries during his arrest or detention. They added that during the detention proceedings, the individual did not share any accounts of harm and did not request medical attention.
The MPS stressed that the allegations circulating in public discussions are unfounded, reiterating its commitment to transparency and cooperation with oversight bodies.
