Zakat al-Mal collections in the Maldives increased by 59.8 per cent during the first two months of 2026 compared to the same period last year, statistics released by the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) show.
MIRA’s latest financial data shows that MVR 17.9 million was collected as Zakat al-Mal between January and the end of February this year, compared to MVR 11.2 million collected during the same period in 2025.
The monthly figures show that MVR 6.05 million was collected in January, while collections rose to MVR 11.8 million in February.
The increase in Zakat al-Mal collections follows several changes introduced to strengthen the national zakat system. These include the implementation of the Zakat Act proposed by the Government and the establishment of the Zakat House as a dedicated institution to manage zakat-related matters.
Zakat al-Mal is a mandatory religious contribution for eligible Muslims, requiring the payment of 2.5 per cent of accumulated wealth that has been held for a full lunar year
Individuals are required to pay Zakat al-Mal if their wealth meets or exceeds the Nisab threshold. Information released by the Zakat House shows that the current Nisab level in the Maldives is set at MVR 19,527.90.
