The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has stated that air quality across the Maldives is expected to deteriorate over the next two days, particularly in Malé and the northern regions of the country.

Speaking to State media, MET said the haze currently affecting the Maldives is likely to impact several parts of the country during this period, with the most significant effects expected in the northern atolls and the Malé area. Reduced air quality is also expected in the southern atolls.

However, MET forecasts that air conditions are likely to improve by the third day.

The agency noted that air quality levels across the Maldives have already worsened compared to earlier in the week.

Data from air quality monitoring systems located in different parts of the country show that the Air Quality Index (AQI) currently exceeds 68 in most areas. In Malé, the AQI has reached 113.

Monitoring equipment installed at the Maldives National University Centre for Maritime Studies campus in Villimalé shows that the AQI there has reached 157.

In general, an AQI reading above 50 is classified as moderate. Experts note that precautionary measures should be considered when air quality reaches this level. Studies also show that when AQI levels exceed 100, health risks may increase for sensitive groups.

The Government has stated that it is continuing to work with regional and international partners to address the current situation while pursuing longer-term measures to strengthen air quality management and environmental resilience.
