Baarah MP Ibrahim Shujau has asserted that members of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) are currently doing more to hold the Government accountable than lawmakers from the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Speaking on the PNC’s Dhivehinge Raajje programme, Shujau argued that in a healthy democratic system, a leader who accepts democratic principles provides the necessary space for their own party members to provide oversight and act when issues arise. He suggested that this internal accountability is a hallmark of the current Administration, contrasting it with the conduct of the 12 MDP members currently serving in the 20th People’s Majlis.
Shujau criticised the opposition’s legislative record, alleging that the MDP has consistently opposed Government proposals aimed at public benefit while making no genuine effort to provide constructive oversight. He pointed out that the MDP has refused to vote in favour of any State budget submitted by the current Administration and declined to approve several cabinet ministers nominated by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
The MP further highlighted the MDP’s actions during the transition between the 19th and 20th People’s Majlis. He noted that shortly after President Dr Muizzu assumed office, the MDP utilised its then-majority to initiate efforts to remove the President from office within his first two weeks.
Shujau questioned whether such a record reflects a party truly standing with the people, concluding that the current friction demonstrates a significant divide between the governance philosophy of the current Administration and the political strategy of the MDP.
