The Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) has expressed its support for holding presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the party said it backs the proposal as it believes conducting the two elections simultaneously would serve the best interests of the country and its people, particularly in light of the current economic situation and the need to maintain national stability.

The statement noted that MDA President Ahmed Siyam Mohamed supports policies aimed at improving the living standards of Maldivians and emphasises the importance of maintaining economic and social stability. The party said that, as both a parliamentarian and a businessman, Siyam has consistently prioritised responsible policies that strengthen the country’s economy.

MDA also stated that it agrees with the Government’s position that holding the two elections on the same day would help reduce State expenditure and contribute to better management of public debt.

The party described the proposal as a positive step for the future of the country and welcomed the Government’s plan to conduct the presidential and parliamentary elections on a single day. MDA further called on State institutions to work together to reduce Government expenditure and strengthen the national economy.

A referendum on the proposed constitutional amendment that would allow the elections to be held simultaneously is scheduled to take place alongside the upcoming Local Council and Women’s Development Committee elections on 4 April.
