Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, has said the Government is working to increase food storage capacity to ensure the uninterrupted supply of essential food items to the Maldives.
He made the remarks during a press briefing held at the President’s Office regarding measures being taken in response to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Concerns have been raised that the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran could affect food security in import-dependent countries such as the Maldives. Addressing these concerns, Minister Saeed said the Government is taking steps to ensure that essential food items remain available to the public without disruption.
The minister said efforts are underway to diversify import markets in addition to the country’s existing suppliers, allowing food items to be sourced from multiple countries if necessary.
He also noted that work is progressing to expand national storage capacity for food supplies to strengthen the system used to store imported goods. These measures will ensure the Maldives to receive essential commodities despite changes in global markets, he added.
The minister further revealed that the Cabinet has recently approved the establishment of a nationwide logistics and shipping network, which is currently being implemented. The network will involve major shipping lines and aims to ensure the reliable transport of goods across the country throughout the year.
Minister Saeed added that the Government is also working with the private sector to strengthen logistics operations.
Referring to the list of 26 essential food items, the minister said there have been no difficulties so far in importing these products into the Maldives from international markets. He added that the Government is also exploring additional markets to secure alternative supply sources if needed.
