President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed that the Maldives will not permit its territory, airspace, or waters to be used in any ongoing conflicts in the Middle East or the Gulf, underscoring the country’s firm commitment to neutrality and sovereignty.
He made the statement during a press briefing held at the President’s Office on Monday, responding to questions from journalists regarding regional tensions and foreign engagement.
Addressing reports of a potential visit by a United States representative, the President said the Maldives remains open to diplomatic engagement with all countries, with the exception of Israel. He noted that representatives from other nations would be welcomed for discussions if they express interest.
However, he clarified that no formal talks have yet taken place with the United States’ designated representative for South and Central Asia, although there has been an indication of interest in meeting Maldivian officials.
The President stressed that even if such discussions were to occur, the Maldives would not entertain any proposals linked to involvement in regional conflicts. He reiterated that no foreign nation would be allowed to use Maldivian land, sea, or airspace for military purposes.
Reaffirming the Maldives’ foreign policy stance, President Dr Muizzu said the Government opposes the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and the Gulf, emphasising that actions which undermine the sovereignty and independence of any nation are unacceptable. He also called for an immediate cessation of hostilities.
The President further reiterated the Maldives’ position on Israel, stating that neither the Government nor the Maldivian people recognise the state. He added that the longstanding injustices faced by the Palestinian people remain unacceptable to the nation.
