President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced a policy shift regarding the forfeiture of land plots in Government housing schemes, allowing beneficiaries to transfer their existing holdings to immediate family members instead of surrendering them to the State.

Speaking at a press briefing at the President’s Office on Monday, the President explained that this revision applies to individuals who receive land or flats through Government housing initiatives.

Under the new directive, these recipients may now opt to transfer ownership of their current Malé land plots to a spouse, child, or sibling, providing a degree of flexibility previously unavailable under the "Binveriya" and subsequent housing programs.

President Dr Muizzu said the decision was taken to address financial challenges faced by citizens, particularly those who have taken loans or made significant investments in their properties.

The President also confirmed that this adjustment will apply retroactively to individuals who were previously mandated to give up land under earlier schemes.

However, certain exceptions will remain. In cases where land was received after forfeiting jointly owned plots, all parties involved must still transfer their shares to the Government.

The policy also does not apply to plot exchange arrangements, where land is exchanged for another Government-issued plot. In such cases, the original land must still be surrendered.

In addition, President Dr Muizzu clarified that the change does not extend to flats. Any flats forfeited in exchange for new housing will still need to be returned to the Government.

The President stated further details on the updated housing policy will be announced soon.
