The People’s National Congress (PNC) has announced that internal elections for constituency-level positions will be held on 11 July, ahead of the party's senate scheduled for September.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Speaker of Parliament and MP for Fonadhoo constituency, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, said the party's senate will convene from 15 to 18 September.
He stated that a 13-member task force has been formed to oversee preparations and coordinate arrangements for the senate meeting.
Elections for constituency positions will take place before the senate, with polling set for 11 July.
Nominations have been opened for several party positions, including constituency president, vice president, president of the women's wing, president of the youth wing, and steering committee president. Interested members may submit their applications through a dedicated online portal launched on Monday, with the nomination period remaining open until 30 June.
Abdul Raheem said only individuals registered as PNC members by Monday would be eligible to contest the elections. Likewise, voting rights will be limited to members whose names appear in the party's registry as of that date.
"The election will be held on Saturday, 11 July 2026. Nominations opened today and will remain open until 30 June. A provisional voters' list will be published on 1 July, after which members will have three days to submit complaints or request corrections. The final voters' list will be released on 4 July," he said.
He further explained that constituency presidents would only be elected in constituencies not represented by a PNC Member of Parliament. In constituencies represented by PNC MPs, the respective parliamentarians would automatically serve as constituency presidents.
Abdul Raheem also noted that the party's regulations empower the leadership to remove constituency presidents, including MPs serving in that capacity, if they are found to have violated the party's constitution or engaged in conduct deemed detrimental to the party.
He added that should such a vacancy arise, an election would be held to appoint a new constituency president.
