Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has stated that the development of dedicated parking buildings will help ease road congestion and address challenges linked to vehicle registration due to limited parking capacity.
He noted that work on seven parking buildings in Hulhumalé is progressing at different stages. The groundbreaking ceremony held on Sunday marks one of the projects planned for Hulhumalé Phase I. Three parking buildings are to be developed in Phase I, while four are planned for Phase II, with preparatory work ongoing for the remaining sites.
The Minister said the project introduces a modern parking system aimed at improving convenience for both pedestrians and motorists, while also strengthening road safety. He added that the initiative represents a significant step towards reducing congestion across the Greater Malé Area.
The planned facilities will include both public and private parking spaces, with capacity for approximately 2,600 four-wheeled vehicles and over 1,000 motorcycles. Designated spaces will also be allocated for individuals requiring special assistance.
Parking congestion has remained a persistent concern in the Malé region, as the growing number of vehicles continues to strain available space. The planned developments are expected to help alleviate these pressures and support more efficient traffic management.
