President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that work on the Government’s project to upgrade Gaafu Dhaalu Kaadedhdhoo Airport to international standards is ongoing, with physical construction expected to begin by mid-year.

The plan to develop the airport and connect it to Thinadhoo via a bridge was first announced by the President during a press conference in May last year.

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, President Dr Muizzu said the project has not progressed at the desired pace. He explained that the Government opted to pursue an investor-financed model rather than funding the project through the State budget, which has required additional time to identify the most viable structure.

Despite the delay, the President stressed that work has not stalled, with planning now nearing completion.

“This is a pledge made to the people of Thinadhoo and Huvadhoo. We are setting realistic targets, and physical work will begin by the middle of this year,” he said.

The Government had initially planned to develop an international airport in Thinadhoo. However, this was later revised in favour of upgrading Kaadedhdhoo Airport and linking it to Thinadhoo through a bridge.

President Dr Muizzu also confirmed in a press briefing last week that the transfer of the airport to Government control for redevelopment will proceed without compensation being paid by the State.
