Dialysis services have been introduced at Komandoo Health Centre, making the island the 11th location to establish such services under the current administration.
The service was officially inaugurated by Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim at a ceremony attended by members of the Komandoo Council and senior officials of the health centre on 30March.
Dialysis treatment, which is required for patients with kidney disease to cleanse the blood, is typically provided two to three times a week, with each session lasting several hours, and the introduction of the service is expected to ease the burden on patients who previously had to travel long distances for treatment.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Nazim said the new facility will benefit not only residents of Komandoo but also those from nearby islands, noting that the service would significantly reduce travel and improve access to essential healthcare.
The dialysis centre is equipped to treat two patients at a time and includes an isolation room, while the government aims to expand dialysis services to all atolls as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare access nationwide, alongside broader measures to improve the resilience of the health system, including reforms to the Aasandha scheme and improved availability of medicines.
