Managing Director of Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) Abdul Matheen Mohamed has said holding presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day is necessary to bring stability to the country’s political landscape.

Speaking on MMTV regarding the referendum scheduled to be held alongside the 4 April elections, MD Matheen said the Maldives has not experienced sustained political stability since the introduction of the democratic system, adding that there is growing public belief that constitutional reform is required.

He said repeated election cycles have increased State expenditure and contributed to economic pressure, questioning the sustainability of the current system, while noting that reforms such as aligning presidential and parliamentary elections could help reduce costs and improve governance.

MD Matheen further stated that governance challenges arise when the executive and parliament are not aligned, adding that holding both elections simultaneously would support more stable administration and facilitate national development efforts.
