RTL ferry services have been launched in Laamu Atoll, with operations officially inaugurated at a ceremony held in Fonadhoo.
The service was launched by Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim, who stated that efforts are underway to expand RTL ferry services to all remaining atolls as part of the Government’s plan to establish a nationwide transport network linking all inhabited islands.
He noted that the initiative is being prioritised under the direction of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to improve connectivity and accessibility across the country, while also supporting the growth of local tourism through easier inter-island travel.
As with other atolls, RTL ferry services in Laamu will operate free of charge during the first week to allow residents to familiarise themselves with the system. Fares will be introduced thereafter for routes within the atoll and for inter-atoll connections, with services provided at subsidised rates by the Government.
Two vessels have been deployed for operations in Laamu Atoll, each with a capacity of 48 passengers, including four seats designated for individuals with special needs. Services will run daily except on Fridays.
With the addition of Laamu Atoll, RTL ferry services are now operational in 15 atolls, covering 145 islands. The Government aims to complete the nationwide rollout of the network by mid-year.
