President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called for greater inclusion, awareness and equal opportunities for individuals with autism, stating that autism is part of the diversity of Maldivian communities.
In his message shared on social media to mark World Autism Awareness Day, President Dr Muizzu stressed that every individual deserves understanding, respect and the opportunity to learn, grow and participate fully in society. He said fostering inclusion across homes, schools, workplaces and public spaces requires awareness, compassion and meaningful action, while emphasising the importance of early intervention, inclusive education and community acceptance.
He further highlighted the need to create opportunities for individuals with autism to develop their skills, talents and livelihoods, noting that such efforts would not only benefit individuals and their families but also strengthen the social fabric of the nation.
The President added that the Government has taken steps to strengthen inclusive education frameworks in schools, expand vocational training and address challenges faced by individuals with autism, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to improving support systems.
The President also called on all Maldivians to continue advocating for dignity, acceptance and equal opportunity, so that individuals with autism can live with respect, purpose and a sense of belonging within society.
World Autism Awareness Day is observed annually on April 2 following its designation by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007 to promote the rights and well-being of individuals with autism and ensure their full participation in society. This year’s theme is “Autism and Humanity – Every Life Has Value”.
