People’s National Congress (PNC) Parliamentary Group Leader and campaign manager Ibrahim Falah has alleged that opposition statements against holding two elections on the same day are intended to encourage and facilitate corruption.
Speaking at a PNC rally last night, Falah said opposition claims that simultaneous elections would reduce outreach to voters and limit financial benefits to the public reflect a narrative linked to election-related spending. He stressed that such remarks imply reliance on monetary incentives during elections, which he described as a form of corruption.
Falah further stated that the Administration of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has prioritised efforts to reduce corruption since assuming office, noting that legislative measures have been taken to address loopholes in existing frameworks. He said reforms introduced in Parliament were aimed at strengthening governance and closing avenues for corrupt practices.
He also added that opposition parties are resisting the proposal to hold elections concurrently due to political interests, adding that the planned referendum on the matter is intended to deliver long-term benefits for the country and its citizens.
Falah said the opposition’s focus on the referendum reflects concern over potential changes that could impact existing political practices, reiterating that the Government’s approach is aimed at improving the electoral system and ensuring greater transparency.
