The “Climate-Induced Water Security in Atoll Nations Forum” has officially commenced, bringing together stakeholders to discuss growing water security challenges faced by island nations due to climate change.

Organised by the Climate Change Department of the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, the forum is being held from 7 April to 9 in Barceló Nasandhura.

The forum brings together representatives from atoll nations including Kiribati, Tuvalu, the Marshall Islands, and Tokelau, along with development partners and technical experts.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim highlighted that climate change is increasingly intensifying water-related challenges in small island states.

He noted that reduced rainfall, prolonged dry periods, and saltwater intrusion into freshwater lenses are among the key issues affecting the Maldives and other atoll nations.

The Minister stated that water security remains a key priority in the Government’s climate agenda. Under the Maldives’ Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC 3.0), efforts are underway to strengthen water systems through climate-resilient infrastructure, the use of technology, and community-based initiatives.

The three-day forum will feature a series of technical sessions focusing on desalination systems, water conservation, and rainwater harvesting. It will also provide a platform for countries to share experiences and best practices.
