The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has reported a sharp rise in dengue cases this year, with a total of 2,183 cases recorded so far.

This marks a significant increase compared to the same period last year, when 374 cases were reported during the first four months.

So far this year, dengue cases have been recorded as follows: 679 in January, 428 in February, 600 in March, and 476 in April.

In comparison, the figures for the same period last year were considerably lower, with 76 cases in January, 87 in February, 76 in March, and 135 in April.

The majority of cases this year have been reported from the atolls, with 1,813 cases, while 370 cases were recorded in Malé.

The HPA stated that it is working with relevant authorities to control the spread of the disease, emphasising that eliminating mosquito breeding sites and taking protective measures against mosquito bites remain the most effective ways to prevent dengue.

The agency has also urged the public to seek medical attention immediately if symptoms appear, following advice from health professionals.
