Former North Hithadhoo MP Mohamed Sinan has decided not to contest the constituency in the upcoming by-election in Addu City, stating that the move is intended to give an opportunity to a new candidate.

The decision comes after Sinan secured the People's National Congress (PNC) ticket through the party’s primary held to select a candidate for the seat.

In a post on social media, Sinan thanked the party’s leadership for their support following his primary victory. He said that after engaging with a large number of constituents over the past three days and holding consultations, he believes the party would have a stronger chance of winning the seat if he steps aside.

Sinan said he will not contest the by-election scheduled for June, adding that he will fully support and actively work to ensure the success of the candidate nominated by the party.

He also noted that the party’s leadership has been informed of his decision and has acknowledged it.

In the PNC primary, Sinan contested against Ahmed Saeed, a councillor representing the Hithadhoo Mooledeke constituency.

The PNC has yet to announce its next course of action following Sinan’s decision.
