Access to fertility treatment in the Maldives had long been limited. While some private hospitals offered services, fertility care was not available at a main Government hospital and was not covered under the national health insurance scheme, Aasandha.

Since the Government assumed office two and a half years ago, efforts have been made to expand access and strengthen fertility services in the country.

In March 2024, IVF treatment was introduced under Aasandha. That year, the service was provided to 100 couples through the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) in separate batches.

The programme has continued since then. As of the end of February this year, 68 individuals had received IVF treatment under Aasandha, with 23 successful cases.

A major milestone was also achieved with the establishment of National Fertility Centre at Dharumavantha Hospital.

On 27 October 2024, Malé City Group of Hospitals (MCGH) CEO Abdul Razzaq Haleem announced plans to open the centre. It was inaugurated by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on 17 November 2024.

The centre now provides all stages of IVF treatment, including egg retrieval, embryo freezing and embryo transfer.

By the end of January this year, eggs had been retrieved and preserved from 86 women, while embryos had been transferred to 68 women. A total of 20 pregnancies have been recorded, with two children born following treatment at the centre.

The introduction of IVF services under Aasandha, alongside the establishment of a fertility centre at a Government hospital, has improved access to treatment and provided expanded options for families seeking fertility care.
