The Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has announced plans to develop a modern multi-operated terminal in Thilafushi as part of the relocation of the Malé Commercial Harbour.

The relocation is scheduled for completion on 11 November next year. MPL shared the update during the “Trade Desk” podcast organised by the Ministry of Economic Development, Trade and Transport.

Speaking on the podcast, MPL’s Manager of Business Development, Aiman Ali, said the project is being implemented under a phased master plan, with preparations currently underway.

He stated that the new port will feature a dedicated container terminal, a domestic terminal and a general cargo handling terminal, integrating key port operations within a single facility designed to modern standards.

Aiman noted that existing operations at the Malé Commercial Harbour and industrial area are limited to approximately five hectares, while the Thilafushi development will expand this to around 20 hectares. The increased capacity is expected to enable the port to handle up to 300,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) annually.

He described the project as a long-term measure to address current capacity constraints, with further expansion planned as demand grows. The development also includes the establishment of a modern multi-operated terminal at the site.

Highlighting the sector’s importance, Aiman said about 90 per cent of imports to the Maldives arrive by sea, highlighting the need to strengthen port infrastructure to support economic activity.

In his Presidential Address 2026, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu stated that cargo clearance times are expected to be reduced from seven days to 48 hours once operations begin at the new port. He noted that this would lower import-related costs and contribute to reducing prices for consumers.

The President also said the relocation would facilitate the transfer of warehousing operations from Malé to Thilafushi, with wholesale businesses in the Malé market area expected to relocate alongside the port.

He added that improved docking and unloading processes at the new facility will reduce vessel waiting times and accelerate the distribution of goods to islands across the country.
