Land reclamation for the domestic airport development project in Milandhoo has reached 90 per cent completion, with the Government targeting completion of the overall project within the next two years.

The update was shared by Deputy Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, Mohamed Nashid, in a post on social media. He stated the majority of reclamation required for both the airport and harbour components of the project has now been completed.

The project involves reclaiming 25 hectares of land and has been awarded to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). The agreement was signed in October last year.

Land reclamation works are expected to be completed within eight months from the commencement of physical works.

The airport has been designed to maximise land use across the island, incorporating the airport site alongside planned inner and outer road networks.

Authorities have also stated that the island’s existing harbour will need to be relocated to accommodate the development. As part of the project’s design and implementation, an alternative site will be identified and developed to support harbour operations.
