The Government has begun developing nature parks on ten islands.
The initiative aligns with the Government’s commitment to establish at least one nature park in every atoll.
The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy stated that applications were opened in 2024 for islands interested in developing nature parks, which received strong interest from councils across the country. Proposals submitted by islands were reviewed and evaluated, following which ten islands were selected for implementation.
The islands chosen for the development of nature parks are Haa Alifu Molhadhoo, Haa Dhaalu Kumundhoo, Noonu Landhoo, Kaafu Huraa, Alifu Dhaalu Omadhoo, Meemu Kolhufushi, Thaa Kin’bidhoo, Laamu Gan, Gaafu Alifu Kon’dey and Gaafu Dhaalu Fiyoaree.
The Government has completed consultations with island councils and finalised the concept and scope of development for each location. Discussions are also underway to provide grants to councils, with agreements currently in the process of being signed.
Nature parks are expected to help preserve the natural beauty and environment of the islands, while also supporting the growth of guesthouse tourism and related economic activity at the local level.
