Chief Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef has said the Government will not act in a way that weakens the justice system, reduces the authority of the courts or limits the legal powers granted to judicial institutions.
Shareef made the remarks during Thursday’s edition of the “Presser with the Spox” press conference series while responding to questions regarding an order issued by the Criminal Court on 10 May in an ongoing case before the courts.
Highlighting the Maldives’ system of separation of powers, he said the Government and President Dr Mohamed Muizzu maintain that court orders must be respected.
He also stated that individuals in all professions hold rights, responsibilities and powers linked to their respective fields. Shareef further stressed that it is not Government policy to exempt any particular group from legal action based on profession or status.
The Government Spokesperson said the Government’s position is that no institution should take action against any party in a manner that violates the law.
Referring to press conferences held at the President’s Office, Shareef said procedures are conducted in line with established rules. However, he noted that matters concerning the enforcement of court orders are handled by the relevant enforcement authorities.
He also stated that if there is any confusion regarding the Criminal Court order issued on 10 May, clarification should be sought through the appropriate legal avenues.
