Chief Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef has said the Government’s biggest achievement so far has been the repayment of inherited debt obligations and the improvement of the country’s financial situation.
Shareef made the remarks during Thursday’s edition of the “Presser with the Spox” press conference series.
He said the Government has been undertaking extensive efforts to settle loans taken by previous administrations. Referring to remarks made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on 11 May, Shareef noted that the Government had repaid USD 50 million from a USD 150 million loan obtained from India after the repayment deadline fell due on 11 May 2026.
Prior to that, the Government had also repaid USD 524 million in sukuk and settled a USD 400 million currency swap arrangement.
Shareef said the Administration has continued development projects and addressed public needs while also working to ensure the country’s debt burden does not rise to unsustainable levels or place additional pressure on future generations.
“The biggest achievement we see at this stage is particularly in the economy,” Shareef said. “Whether it is the budget, foreign currency situation, national debt or the level allocated for PSIP projects, these are among the Administration’s biggest achievements.”
He said efforts to strengthen the country’s financial position involved several areas, including diplomatic engagement with foreign partners. Shareef added that international cooperation had supported the Government’s debt repayment efforts and helped improve perceptions of the Maldives internationally.
The Government Spokesperson further stated that expectations of an improved credit rating for the Maldives reflect the financial progress achieved under the current Administration.
He also said the Government’s main priority during the current term is fulfilling its pledges. Shareef stated that President Dr Muizzu’s primary objective is to deliver on promises made to the public, including through accelerating work, introducing necessary reforms and changing policies where required to achieve development goals.
