President Mohamed Muizzu has stated that there is currently no responsible opposition political party in the Maldives, while criticising the conduct and priorities of opposition groups.
Speaking at the People's National Congress (PNC) gathering on Thursday night, President Dr Muizzu stated that the Administration remains focused on policies aimed at benefiting the country and its citizens, while also working to eliminate corruption.
President Dr Muizzu further stated that opposition parties have failed to provide meaningful responses to the Government’s policies, initiatives and achievements. According to the President, the opposition has prioritised self-interest over national interests and has not demonstrated alternative solutions or policy directions.
Speaking on the role of opposition parties in a democracy, the President stated that a responsible opposition remains an important component of democratic governance. He alleged that opposition groups in the Maldives lacked sincerity toward national interests and were instead driven by personal and political interests.
The President also referred to corruption cases linked to previous administrations, including the ventilator procurement case during the COVID-19 pandemic and the MMPRC corruption scandal. He expressed hope that independent institutions would continue investigating such cases and take action against those found responsible, while assuring the Government’s cooperation in those efforts.
