The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has forecast deteriorating weather conditions across much of the Maldives over the next 24 hours, with heavy rain and thunderstorms expected in several parts of the country.

MET said widespread showers accompanied by thunderstorms are likely across different regions, while rough seas and strong winds are also expected during the period.

Winds in southern atolls are expected from the west-southwest and west, while the rest of the country will experience winds from the west and northwest at speeds between 13 and 23 miles per hour. Gusts could reach up to 45 miles per hour during squally conditions.

Sea conditions are also expected to worsen, with wave heights forecast between four and seven feet across the country.

MET noted that wind speeds may fluctuate during periods of heavy rain, with sudden strengthening and weakening expected at times.

Rainfall records published by the weather authority show the highest rainfall over the past 24 hours was recorded in Malé City and Meemu Muli. Malé recorded 49.7 millimetres of rain, while Muli recorded 49.2 millimetres. Hulhumalé recorded 35.1 millimetres.

Authorities have advised the public to remain cautious during sea travel and to take necessary safety precautions due to the expected heavy rain, strong winds and rough seas.
