The State has received MVR 50.7 million in Zakat al-Mal so far this year, marking an 8.7 per cent increase compared to the same period last year, statistics released by the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) show.

The figures show MVR 46.6 million in Zakat al-Mal had been collected during the same period in 2025.

February recorded the highest monthly collection this year, with MVR 11.8 million received.

Breakdown of Zakat al-Mal collections this year:

  • January: MVR 6.05 million
  • February: MVR 11.8 million
  • March: MVR 27.4 million
  • April: MVR 5.4 million

The nisab, or minimum wealth threshold required for Zakat al-Mal to become obligatory, was revised to MVR 21,836.50 effective from April 21, 2026.

The updated threshold represents an increase of 11.8 percent from the previous nisab of MVR 19,527.90 announced in December. The revision follows changes in global silver prices, with the nisab currently calculated based on 595 grams of silver at a rate of MVR 36.70 per gram.

Zakat al-Mal is one of the five pillars of Islam and requires eligible Muslims to contribute a portion of their accumulated wealth annually to those entitled to receive it. Individuals whose wealth meets or exceeds the nisab and remains above that level for one full lunar year are required to pay 2.5 percent of their wealth as zakat each year.
