The Business Center Corporation (BCC) has assured the public that the development of the garment factory in Addu City is progressing on schedule, despite recent social media claims suggesting that the project had been suspended.
BCC Managing Director Ibrahim Ziyau Mohamed addressed the rumours, stressing that the project will continue as planned. He clarified that while part of the originally designated land has been allocated for a different project, BCC has formally requested an alternative plot from the Addu City Council to ensure construction proceeds without delay.
Ziyau reassured stakeholders that work would move forward once the new land is allocated, and the corporation is ready to begin physical construction as soon as possible. He also confirmed that the Addu City Council had already provided a 30,000-square-foot parcel of land for the factory’s development.
BCC signed an agreement with the Addu City Council to secure land for the garment factory in June 2024. By September, the corporation had begun seeking investors for the project, with the goal of fostering growth within the clothing and garment sector. The facility is expected to offer enhanced marketing services and contribute to the local industry’s development.
This project, led by the Ministry of Economic Development, is part of a larger initiative to reduce the country’s reliance on garment imports, create job opportunities, and foster industrial and economic growth in Addu City.
As part of its mission to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), BCC continues to create a conducive business environment, including the establishment of a centralised database for SMEs and support for self-employed individuals across various sectors.
