The Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, has welcomed representatives from several Chinese companies as part of an initiative to explore investment opportunities in the Maldives' fisheries, mariculture, and blue economy sectors.

The meeting, held at the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, provided an overview of the Maldives’ ambitious plans for the development of the sector. Minister Shiyam outlined the Government’s efforts to establish sport fishing harbours and promote mariculture initiatives. He also expressed his commitment to supporting foreign investments aimed at enhancing these areas.

During their visit, the Chinese delegation included business leaders and officials from the First Institute of Oceanography under China’s Ministry of Natural Resources. Discussions focused on fostering collaboration, particularly in research and training related to mariculture.

Both sides explored the potential for signing an agreement between the Maldives Marine Research Institute and the First Institute of Oceanography to facilitate joint efforts in marine research.

Minister Shiyam highlighted the Government’s ambition to enhance the fisheries sector to match the tourism industry in its economic significance. He underscored that revitalising the fisheries sector is a central focus of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s Administration, with its growth expected to play a vital role in increasing the country’s foreign exchange earnings
