The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare has raised concerns over increasing reports of stray cats being tortured, injured, and killed on the streets of some islands in the Maldives.
In a statement, the Ministry urged the public to refrain from such acts, emphasising that animal cruelty goes against established animal health standards and fundamental principles of humanity.
The Ministry highlighted the importance of adhering to the guidelines set by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), to which the Maldives is a signatory. The Organisation’s Animal Health Code prioritises the welfare and health of animals, emphasising their role in agriculture, recreation, and scientific research.
The Ministry also explained that abandoned pet cats often struggle to adapt to life without consistent care and food, leading to distress and a heightened dependence on human interaction. While animals may occasionally pose risks to humans due to their instinctive behaviour, the Ministry stressed that this does not justify abuse or mistreatment.
Emphasising the importance of compassion, the Ministry reminded the public that Islam advocates kindness and care towards animals, urging people to treat them responsibly and avoid causing harm.
In response to these concerns, the Ministry has announced plans to assess the condition of stray cats, not only in Malé but also across other islands in the Maldives.
Additionally, the Government has established a pet care facility, named Olhu Hiyaa, aimed at managing the growing population of stray cats in Malé. Efforts are currently underway to fully operationalise the facility to ensure the health and welfare of stray cats.
