In a year marked by transformative environmental initiatives, the Government of Maldives has demonstrated strong leadership in environmental protection and climate action. Under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's Administration and the strategic direction of Minister Thoriq Ibrahim at the Ministry of Climate Change, Energy, and Environment, the nation has made significant strides in implementing comprehensive environmental programs and policies throughout 2024.

Water and sewerage projects across the nation

One of the priorities for the Government over the past year was the establishment of and completion of the water and sewerage projects across the nation. In this regard, the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy has achieved notable milestones.

By October 2024, water supply systems were operational on 125 islands, with sewerage systems functional on 134 islands. In 2024 alone, water systems were established on 20 additional islands based on specific requests.

To enhance water management, the ministry signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) to assess and upgrade systems in Malé and Vilimalé.

Additionally, an infiltration skimming gallery system was installed in Nolhivaranfaru, South Thiladhummathi, through the Climate Technology Centre and Network, ensuring sustainable water resources for farmers while safeguarding the water table.

Climate change and environmental management

The Ministry also prioritised efforts to combat climate change and improve environmental management.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation to enhance data management systems in the transport sector, facilitating the preparation of a comprehensive National Greenhouse Gas Inventory.

Furthering agricultural sustainability, the Ministry initiated a foreign-funded project to assess groundwater conditions on four key agricultural islands in Laamu Atoll: Isdhoo, Kalaidhoo, Dhanbidhoo, and Gan. Additionally, 12 students from Laamu Atoll received scholarships to pursue the Advanced Certificate in Environmental Management, fostering local expertise in this critical area.

Another significant milestone was achieved with President Dr Muizzu endorsing the Maldives Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy 2024-2030. The strategy aims to protect the nation against climate hazards while enhancing disaster preparedness and community resilience. Aligning with the Sendai Framework and complementing the National Adaptation Plan, this initiative strengthens the Maldives' position as a leader among Small Island Developing States in climate resilience.

Internationally, the Maldives actively participated in the Small Islands Coalition for Nature and co-chaired the Asia Protected Areas Partnership, underscoring its dedication to conservation on both regional and global scales.

Conservation and waste management initiatives

Conservation efforts and waste management initiatives also made prominent strides during the year. The Ministry designated two environmentally significant areas in Malé Atoll for protection and launched a nationwide tree-planting campaign targeting five million trees. By the end of the year, a total of 450,936 saplings were planted across the nation, with 70 pledges guaranteed for an additional 4,219,456 samplings nationwide.

On the waste management front, the national programme Magey Saafu Raajje was launched to address waste collection and disposal challenges. In collaboration with the Government of Japan, 78 vehicles were provided to 77 islands, significantly enhancing garbage collection services.

Meteorological advancements and international presence

The Ministry also placed priority on Meteorological advancements this year. As such, lightning sensors were installed in Hulhulé, Gan, and Hanimaadhoo to establish a network spanning three regions, with trained personnel ensuring system operation.

The radar system in Hulhumalé was repaired, and a new radar installed in Gan, Addu City, to bolster weather monitoring. High-performance computing systems and a decision-support mechanism were successfully tested in Fuvahmulah for impact-based forecasting.

Efforts are also underway to repair 12 of the 26 damaged automatic weather stations across the country, with plans for upgrades advancing through collaboration with the UN environment body.

During the past year, the Maldives strengthened its regional presence by participating in microbiological programmes and fostering partnerships with international organisations and NGOs, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing environmental resilience and promoting sustainable practices.

Minister Thoriq Ibrahim has set a goal of making the Maldives climate-ready within five years. This is a testament to the President's statement at COP29, where he stressed that no Maldivian should be forced to leave their home despite the nation's ecological fragility.
