The Maldivian Government has reiterated its dedication to agriculture as a pivotal driver of economic growth.
During his ongoing tour of the Gaafu Alifu and Gaafu Dhaalu Atolls, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu discussed the strategic significance of agriculture and pledged sustained support to local farmers during his address in Nilandhoo.
Speaking to the residents of Nilandhoo, a community of around 700 people predominantly dependent on agricultural income, President Dr Muizzu detailed plans to establish a reliable market for their produce. Stressing the essential role of agriculture in the nation's economy, he spoke of the Government’s aim to enhance food security and reduce reliance on imports by boosting domestic production.
Central to this strategy is the development of an Agriculture Economic Zone (AEZ). This project, undertaken in partnership with the Maldives Industrial Development Free Zone(MID) which is under the State Trading Organisation (STO) and China Harbour Engineering Company Limited.
Nilandhoo, known for its longstanding agricultural heritage, is poised to reap significant benefits from these initiatives.
President Dr Muizzu assured residents that their needs and aspirations would shape the Government’s approach, reaffirming his commitment to addressing their concerns and supporting their livelihoods.
