Bank of Maldives (BML) issued a statement on Wednesday addressing misleading social media content that falsely suggested cryptocurrency could be exchanged at BML ATMs.
The viral video implied that digital currencies obtained through online trading could be converted to cash through the bank's ATM network.
In its official response, BML firmly stated that it does not provide cryptocurrency exchange services through any of its channels. The bank clarified that while its ATMs process transactions from major payment networks including Visa, MasterCard and American Express, they do not support any form of cryptocurrency transactions.
The bank specifically refuted claims about large withdrawals, stating that contrary to the video's suggestion, it is not possible to withdraw the Maldivian Rufiyaa equivalent of USD 100,000 in a single transaction from any account, regardless of the card type utilised.
BML expressed concern over the unauthorised use of its ATM imagery and logo in the video, which they say misrepresents the bank's services and could mislead both customers and the general public. The bank condemned the creation and circulation of such misleading content.
The statement comes amid increased customer enquiries following the video's circulation on social media platforms. Customers are encouraged to verify information through official BML channels.
