President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has addressed recent misunderstandings concerning the Maldives' regional development strategy, clarifying key points on the proposed urban centres for sustainable regional growth.

In a post on his official X account, President Dr Muizzu explained that the government’s Sustainable Regional Development Policy focuses on creating two main development zones—one for the northernmost atolls and another for the southernmost atolls, along with seven additional urban centres in various islands across the nation.

These initiatives, part of a 20-year development masterplan developed with input from technical experts, local councils, and the community, are being misrepresented by certain political figures, according to the President.

The Ministry of Housing, Land, and Infrastructure Development has confirmed the chosen islands for the seven urban centres: Ungoofaaru, Eydhafushi, Naifaru, Mahibadhoo, Nilandhoo, Kudahuvadhoo, and Fonadhoo.

President Dr Muizzu reiterated that these developments aim to offer high-quality services across the country, separate from Male’ City, aligning with the government’s commitment to balanced national growth.
