President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated his Administration's commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the country’s fishermen and aligning policies with their aspirations.

These remarks were made during his visit to several islands in Huvadhoo Atoll, where he met with residents of Dhevvadhoo today.

In his discussion, President Dr Muizzu spoke of the significance of the fisheries sector, describing it as a resilient industry that is less vulnerable to external economic disruptions. He stressed that, with effective management, fisheries could become the largest contributor to the nation’s production and a driver in increasing the wealth of local communities.

The President noted that the fisheries sector is firmly in the hands of the local people and holds immense potential to generate prosperity. He also discussed the importance of expanding the industry through foreign aid and the national budget, alongside increasing workforce participation.

The Government has already undertaken efforts to develop the sector, which include plans to enhance infrastructure, boost manpower, and address the concerns raised by fishermen.

Furthermore, the President spoke of the importance of engaging directly with fishermen to better understand their challenges and incorporate their feedback into policy decisions.

This approach, he stated, aims to ensure the sustainability and growth of the fisheries industry, which plays a vital role in the Maldivian economy.
