Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef has responded to recent criticisms of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s Administration, emphasising the President’s openness to constructive criticism while condemning disparaging remarks against the Maldivian public.

Taking to platform X, the Vice President stated that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu welcomes constructive criticism, describing it as an essential trait for any leader or politician dedicated to serving the nation and its people. However, he condemned the use of criticism as a means to demean the public by portraying them as uncivilised or far removed from democratic values.

The response follows remarks made by Umar Naseer, former Home Minister and an independent candidate in the 2023 Maldivian presidential election. During the interview, Umar accused the Government of coming to power through deceit and alleged corruption within the Administration.

He claimed that public confidence in the Government has declined and predicted that President Dr Muizzu might face challenges in the next elections. While opposing street protests as a means of bringing about a change in government, he highlighted the historical readiness of Maldivians to mobilise for reform when deemed necessary.

Additionally, Umar criticised the Administration for not fulfilling certain promises, such as securing the release of former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and removing Indian military personnel stationed in the Maldives. He alleged that Indian troops remain stationed at three locations across the country and suggested the Government may pursue further legal actions against Yameen, including potential prosecution and imprisonment.
