Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Nazim has appealed to Maldivian media outlets to avoid publishing misleading and controversial news that could distort public understanding.
This appeal comes after several media outlets potentially misrepresented comments from his interview with Sun Online on January 25 regarding media regulation.
In a statement released on Sunday, Nazim emphasised his commitment to media freedom, and acknowledged the media's position as a powerful, independent entity and its fundamental role in democratic society.
Reflecting on his parliamentary career, Nazim highlighted his advocacy for public interests and rights protection. He particularly noted his role in drafting the Maldives Civil Service Act, which aimed to shield the civil service from political influence during the introduction of political parties to the Maldives.
Regarding media regulation, Nazim explained that the Maldives currently maintains two regulatory institutions, which he suggested are operating sub-optimally. He noted that these institutions, which received over MVR 18 million from the state budget in 2024, represent a duplication of state resources without producing effective results.
Nazim clarified that his objective is to reform inefficient institutions and establish appropriate oversight for media organisations, aligning with the industry's own interests.
On the subject of youth-oriented media platforms, Nazim advocated for regulation rather than outright blocking of platforms used for entertainment, income generation, and expression. He stressed the importance of maintaining dignity and honour in platform usage, whilst noting the current absence of legal frameworks in the Maldives for addressing harm caused through these mediums.
Drawing international comparisons, Nazim observed that many countries are currently developing and implementing similar regulatory frameworks. He emphasised the growing importance of establishing comprehensive legal structures, particularly given the advancement of technologies such as artificial intelligence.
The statement concluded with Nazim reiterating his appeal to media outlets to maintain truthful and responsible reporting practices that avoid misleading the public.
The Government has also dismissed speculation about new media regulation legislation, with President's Office Spokesperson Heena Waleed confirming no such plans exist.
Heena emphasised the Administration's dedication to maintaining press freedom through self-regulation, stating that no media control bill is on the Government's agenda. This position aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's earlier statement supporting freedom of expression within constitutional boundaries.
