President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the First Amendment to the Tobacco Control Act, banning e-cigarettes and vaping devices in the Maldives. The law also prohibits tobacco use in government buildings, restricts sales to those over 21 with ID verification, and disallows all tobacco advertising and display. The amendment, set to take effect in stages from 15 November to 15 December 2024, introduces fines for violations and aims to strengthen public health protections.
