The Cyber Crime Centre of the Maldives Police Service has issued a warning about a rise in Facebook Marketplace scams and the growing threat of flash call fraud.

Authorities urge the public to exercise caution when making online purchases and using new digital authentication methods.

Scams on Facebook Marketplace have increased, with fraudsters posting fake listings that appear legitimate due to attractive pricing. The Cyber Crime Centre advises buyers to research items thoroughly, even if deals seem appealing, and to scrutinise seller profiles. Red flags include recently created accounts, limited personal information, and a low number of friends.

To reduce risks, buyers are encouraged to opt for cash-on-delivery, allowing them to inspect items before completing transactions. Both parties should agree on the terms to ensure a safe exchange.

In addition to marketplace scams, the Police have raised concerns over flash call fraud, an emerging cyber threat linked to a new authentication method replacing traditional One-Time Passwords (OTPs).

Unlike OTPs, which are delivered via SMS, flash calls authenticate users through a phone or missed call, with the code embedded in the last digits of the calling number. While faster and cheaper, flash calls have become a target for scammers who trick users into sharing these numbers, granting unauthorised access to personal accounts.

The Cyber Crime Centre reports a surge in flash call scams, partly due to limited public understanding of the technology. Users are urged not to share phone codes, call details, or missed call numbers with anyone, as this can lead to account breaches.

The Maldives Police Service emphasises the importance of vigilance in online transactions and account security, encouraging the public to stay informed and report suspicious activity.
