President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to restore Rasfannu Beach and Sultan Park, two key public spaces in Malé, following concerns over their deteriorating condition.

In a statement on X, the President acknowledged that both locations have suffered significant damage and emphasised the Government’s commitment to revitalising them.

These spaces have long served as essential recreational areas for Malé residents. Rasfannu Beach, one of the city’s few designated coastal retreats, has provided space for swimming, exercise, and social gatherings.

Sultan Park, originally part of the Malé Royal Palace grounds, has been a rare green space in the densely populated capital, offering residents a quiet place for relaxation.

However, both locations have experienced environmental degradation, lack of maintenance, and structural decline, raising public concerns over their future.

Rasfannu Beach was officially developed in 2016 as part of an urban beautification and recreational initiative. The artificial beach was designed to provide safe access to the sea within Malé, an island with limited open spaces.

Over time, issues such as coastal erosion, pollution, and inadequate maintenance have contributed to its declining state.

Sultan Park, on the other hand, underwent a major redevelopment in 2017, transforming it into a modern landscaped park with interactive features, water fountains, and improved walkways.

Despite these enhancements, concerns over maintenance and accessibility have persisted, with reports of neglected infrastructure and restricted public use.

In response to these growing concerns, President Dr Muizzu has assured the public that the Government will take special measures to restore the beauty and functionality of these spaces.

While specific details of the restoration project are yet to be disclosed, the initiative is expected to focus on improving infrastructure, ensuring proper maintenance, and enhancing visitor experience.

Given the role these locations play in the daily lives of Malé residents, their restoration will be a crucial step towards preserving public recreational spaces.

Well-maintained urban areas contribute significantly to the quality of life in densely populated cities. In Malé, where open spaces are limited, accessible recreational areas provide essential opportunities for relaxation, physical activity, and social interaction.

The Government’s commitment to restoring Rasfannu Beach and Sultan Park reflects an effort to enhance urban infrastructure and ensure that these spaces remain valuable community assets. As planning and implementation progress, further updates on the project are expected.
