The Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim, has stated that bringing environmental responsibilities under the tourism sector's jurisdiction will enhance environmental protection, promote renewable energy, and improve waste management in the Maldives.
Speaking at Saturday night's Ahaa Ministerial Forum, organised by the President's Office and Public Service Media (PSM), Minister Thoriq addressed questions regarding the Government's decision to merge the Ministries of Tourism and Environment. He explained that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's decision was driven by the strong connection between tourism and environmental conservation.
According to the Minister, 65 per cent of tourists visit the Maldives for its natural beauty, making environmental preservation crucial to sustaining the tourism industry. He noted that maintaining the country's environmental wealth would not only protect its ecosystems but also serve as a major drawcard for visitors, thereby boosting the tourism sector.
Minister Thoriq further emphasised that sustainable tourism is gaining global attention, and integrating environmental management with tourism operations would support the transition to more eco-friendly practices. He pointed out that resorts could benefit from renewable energy solutions rather than relying on generators, while also improving water production and waste disposal systems.
Previously, these responsibilities fell under the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, but Minister Thoriq noted that managing them within the tourism sector would allow for more direct implementation of sustainability initiatives. He explained that the merger would facilitate resorts and tourism businesses in adopting green policies, as environmental regulations and tourism operations will now be overseen by a single ministry.
The Minister also stated that the merger would strengthen collaboration between tourism and environmental stakeholders, ensuring that conservation efforts align with the country's tourism development goals.
