The Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works is currently establishing two mobile units to provide public services in the islands, according to Minister Adam Shareef Umar.

Speaking at a press conference held at the President's Office today, the Minister emphasised that expanding public works services throughout the Maldives is a key Government objective.

He noted that as island councils currently lack the financial capacity to provide these public services, documents for the project to establish two specialised mobile units have now been submitted to the Ministry of Finance and planning.

"With councils lacking sufficient resources, we are developing two mobile units for this purpose. The President's Office has directed us to proceed with this work in consultation with the Ministry of Finance," the Minister explained.

Further discussing this service, the Minister acknowledged that councils have been taking the initiative in providing public works services, and assured they would receive all possible support.

"Notably, a system for customs duty exemption is being established to support these efforts," the Minister added.

The Government aims to introduce public works services in 15 atolls of the Maldives this year. Work is already underway to establish public works units in seven regions across the country.
