The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been awarded the contract to develop an airport in Raa Atoll Fainu.
In line with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to improve domestic connectivity and boost economic growth, the agreement was signed between Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and MTCC, under which feasibility studies, environmental impact assessments, and design work will be carried out before construction begins. MACL Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed expressed confidence that the project would be completed on schedule.
The contract signing follows President Dr Muizzu’s visit to Fainu on January 23, where he assured residents that work on the airport would commence soon after the agreement was finalised. He also noted that modifications would be made to the island’s water and sewerage infrastructure to ensure uninterrupted services during construction.
MP for Inguraidhoo constituency, Ibrahim Falah, who attended the signing ceremony, emphasised the airport’s significance for the atoll, stating that it would strengthen the local economy and facilitate tourism growth. He highlighted that Raa Atoll has become an important tourism hub, and the new airport is expected to create job opportunities and attract further investment.
MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudee reiterated the company’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure and connectivity across the Maldives. The Government has stated that the airport will be a key development for Fainu and its surrounding islands, supporting economic expansion and increasing employment prospects in the region.
