Whilst an orange alert has been issued for a large part of the central Maldives, heavy rain has fallen in the Malé area causing widespread flooding, prompting the Maldives Police Service to mobilise to protect citizens' homes and property.
In a post on X, Police stated that drainage work is currently underway due to flooding in some areas of Malé during the ongoing downpour. The agency also confirmed that police officers remain ready to ensure the safety of people and property throughout this operation.
As Police continues its efforts, the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has been working to drain water by installing pumps in the most severely flooded areas of Malé. Additionally, the MNDF has been working continuously to place sandbags near residential properties in affected areas to prevent water ingress and implement protective measures.
According to the Maldives Meteorological Service, weather conditions are expected to deteriorate further with additional rainfall forecast for tonight. The agency has issued an orange alert covering a significant portion of the central Maldives, including Malé, extending from Baa Atoll.
While confirming that police remain on standby to ensure the safety of citizens and property, the service has requested that anyone requiring assistance contact 911.
