Progressive National Congress (PNC) leader and Member of Parliament for Inguraidhoo constituency, Ibrahim Falah, stated today that reshuffling committee memberships is a standard practice within parliamentary groups.

In a statement on social media platform X, MP Falah explained that transferring members between committees has been common across different parliamentary sessions.

According to MP Falah, similar committee reshuffles took place in the 17th, 18th, and 19th parliaments and continue in the current 20th parliament.

He noted that these changes are influenced by several factors, including the size of parliamentary groups, the number of committees, members' attendance records, and their level of engagement in committee work.

His statement comes after Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla announced several committee membership changes involving PNC members during today's parliamentary session. The changes are:

  • Public Accounts Committee: Ahmed Aifan, Member for North Henveyru constituency, replacing Ahmed Azaan Marzooq, Member for Central Hithadhoo constituency
  • Committee on Member's Privileges and Ethics: Ahmed Azaan Marzooq, Member for Central Hithadhoo constituency, replacing Mohamed Ismail, Member for Vilimale constituency
  • Petition Committee: Ahmed Azaan Marzooq, Member for Central Hithadhoo constituency, replacing Ahmed Aifan, Member for North Henveyru constituency
  • Committee on National Security Services (241): Mohamed Ismail, Member for Vilimale constituency, replacing Ahmed Azaan Marzooq, Member for Central Hithadhoo constituency

Under parliamentary regulations, political parties have the authority to replace committee members with others from the same party by simply notifying the Speaker.
