The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and the Election Commission (EC) have condemned a recent incident during an opposition MDP protest in Male’ City, where derogatory remarks were made against a child, violating their dignity.
The incident, where a MDP activist made inappropriate comments about President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's son in relation to the country’s vaping ban. The comments sparked outrage, as they were seen as an infringement on the child’s dignity on March 12, 2025.
The HRCM condemned the remarks, stating that such behaviour goes beyond the acceptable limits of free expression, particularly when it involves children. The commission called on authorities to take necessary actions to prevent similar incidents in the future, highlighting that children are entitled to special protections under both the Constitution and the protection of children act.
The Election Commission (EC) has also issued a statement urging the MDP to conduct its political activities within the legal framework. The EC reminded the party of its obligations under the political party and the freedom of peaceful assembly acts. The commission condemned the unsubstantiated remarks made during the protest and called on political parties to ensure their activities do not harm the dignity or well-being of individuals, particularly children.
The HRCM further expressed concern over other issues observed during the protest, including minor injuries sustained by participants in clashes with police and disruptions to public order. The commission urged organisers to conduct future protests in a way that minimises public inconvenience and respects the rights of others. It also called on law enforcement to use force only when necessary and within legal limits, while ensuring the work of journalists covering the protests is not hindered.
Both the HRCM and the EC stressed the importance of political activities being carried out responsibly and within the confines of the law, to protect the rights and dignity of all individuals, especially children.
