Residents across seven atolls in the Maldives have happily welcomed the launch of new ATM services, marking the end of a long wait for convenient banking access.
The new machines, introduced by the Bank of Maldives (BML), allow residents to deposit and withdraw money, transfer funds, repay loans, and make last-minute credit card payments around the clock.
The ATM service, which began operations yesterday, has been introduced in Haa Alif Uligan, Thuraakunu, Utheemu, Molhadhoo, Thakandhoo, and Marandhoo. The initiative follows an announcement made during a visit to the islands earlier this year in January, where it was confirmed that ATM services would soon be available in these locations.
Residents who gathered at the newly opened ATMs expressed a sense of relief and happiness. Many shared experiences of the difficulties they had faced before the service was introduced. A young resident described the previous challenges, noting that businesses and senior citizens had to travel to Dhidhoo or other islands with ATM facilities to withdraw cash, as there were no alternative means to access funds locally. The process was time-consuming and inconvenient, especially for those who relied on cash transactions.
For local traders, the new service is expected to bring significant benefits. Previously, business owners had to rely on alternative arrangements, such as paying boat operators to transport goods. With the installation of ATMs, they can now deposit and withdraw money with ease, reducing the time and effort needed to manage financial transactions.
The ATM service launch was met with enthusiasm from the community. A young resident of Haa Alif Muraidhoo, where one of the ATMs was set up, expressed that the service marked a major step towards local development. The initiative was also welcomed by Ibrahim Shujau, MP for the Baarah constituency, who acknowledged the positive impact on the island’s economy and daily life.
An elderly resident highlighted the financial burden of the previous system, explaining that withdrawing even a small amount of cash often required spending significantly more due to travel expenses. The launch of ATMs in these atolls, he noted, has put an end to the long-standing difficulties faced by residents.
The Government has emphasised its commitment to ensuring that all citizens have access to essential banking services without the need to leave their home islands. As part of this broader goal, BML aims to install 250 ATMs across the country by the end of the year, further improving financial accessibility for communities nationwide.
