President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has conveyed greetings to the Government and people of New Zealand on the occasion of Waitangi Day.
In a message, the President extended felicitations to New Zealand’s Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro and Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, as well as to the wider New Zealand public. He noted that Waitangi Day reflects the significance of embracing diversity in fostering national unity and progress.
The President expressed his wishes for enduring peace and continued prosperity for New Zealand, and said he was confident that the close ties between the Maldives and New Zealand would continue to strengthen in the years ahead, bringing mutual benefit to both countries.
Waitangi Day, observed annually on 6 February, commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840 between the British Crown and Māori chiefs, which is regarded as a foundational document in the establishment of modern New Zealand. The day is recognised as New Zealand’s national day and is marked by official ceremonies and public events across the country.
